You may recall I spent some time in Bali last summer, but in the spirit of Throw Back Thursday/Flash Back Friday, I'm dredging up my good memories with the help of Conde Nast Traveler, which features my adventure in the current March issue, on newsstands now. You can also check out the highlights on CNT's website here!

Leave it to the fashion crowd to transform the good old paisley bandana scarf into the newest must-have accessory. Of course, this is no ordinary bandana, but rather a silk rendition by Saint Laurent. (Red version here; smaller, less expensive one here or this iteration by Pepe Jeans.) But, wait, are you thinking what I'm thinking? If so, you can find the original cotton paisley bandana (in black, navy and red!) here. And if a bandana isn't your thing, you can still pull off this on-the-verge paisley print via this Free People jacket, this Charlotte Olympia clutch, this Zimmermann bikini or next fall's Burberry dress.

cool culottes

Like it or not, culottes are officially the new must-have pants for spring. I know, I know these cropped wide-leg pants can make one look wider and shorter. But, there are certain pairs that actually flatter the body and they all share several attributes in common: they are less structured and rather more fluid and skirt-like in nature. Also, the less wide the pant leg is, the better, and a leg-elongating heel is always a good teammate, though a pointy toe Jimmy Choo (pictured above) proves pretty, too. Silk ones are the best at transitioning from day to night, and I think they're the most comfy as well. My favorites are by Elizabeth and James, Stella McCartney, Club Monaco, Asos, and Alice & Olivia.

Things that make life easier are things I deeply love. Which explains why I have my heart set on this look-chic-in-under-a-minute jumpsuit by Madewell. The fit is relaxed and pull-on-and-go easy, but also compelling is its versatility: I plan on wearing it (non-stop) with dressed-up heels and fun jewelry as well as with casual flat sandals and a go-anywhere tote bag. Perfection!

parkas and puffers

While technicolor fur and over-the-top statement coats took over the streets (and catwalks) of New York last week, in London, where fashion week is now in full swing, it's all about rain-ready utilitarian parkas and puffers. This type of outerwear is not only English weather-suitable, but also ideal for our imminent spring showers. My recent (and prescient!) purchase of this moto-inspired stylish Patagonia puffer has enabled me to go from the Sierra ski slopes to soggy school runs in style. Other spot-on options include this Red Valentino (70% off), this Madewell, this J.Crew, this Moncler, this Gap, this Joe Fresh, and this Acne Studios (20% off).

$39, joe fresh

A Saturday night dinner at my sister's house featured a delicious Mallorcan feast (courtesy of a chef friend in town from the Spanish isle) and great fashion inspo, provided by a television producer pal, who turned up in a classically chic striped top, wide leg trousers and a Burberry trench. The striped staple, above, featuring an anything-but-basic zippered neckline, captures her distinctly cool style perfectly.

the new button-down

The new button-down staple we all need for spring is the skirt kind. It has a cool retro spirit, echoing the '70s vibes on the runways, but the flattering, A-line cut keeps it looking thoroughly modern and fresh. My favorites include this supple suede Theory (also in navy), this denim H&M or this Stella McCartney, this black Topshop, this sleek leather Alexander Wang, this white pencil Current/Elliott, this faded denim Moschino and this mini Esprit.
