Fall and plaid have always gone together like bread and butter, but not this year. Instead, the windowpane print is making a big (and fresh) statement, most notably at Paris Fashion Week. The graphic pattern is bold and modern and just about as versatile as beloved stripes. I'd like to do my checks and balances with this striking Pim & Larkin sweater, this office-ready Theory blouse, this edgy feminine 3.1 Phillip Lim dress, this Warehouse funnel neck jumper (similar to the one below) and this Chloe dress (as worn by Olivia Palermo, below) or this similar-looking but less expensive French Connection or Ali Ro.

I'll be the first to admit: long-term planning is not my forte. I'm more of a live-in-the-present (sometimes dwell-in-the-past) type. But not today! With all the sexy lace-up sandals popping up at Paris Fashion Week (Chloe, above, Stella McCartney, below), I decided to pounce on a pair of very unwintry lace-up sandals on sale at Shopbop that will serve me very well next spring. Other just marked-down items that will work for me now and later: these super versatile Frame straight-leg jeans (50% off), this gorgeous party-perfect Ramy Brook maxi (70% off), this pretty white lace Spell blouse (30% off), and these Jules Smith stacking rings. Check out the whole sale here.

winter uniform
Monday, September 29
In walked my sister last night for a casual Sunday family dinner, wearing a wintry outfit, comprised of a big, cozy turtleneck, slouchy menswear-inspired trousers, and sporty sneakers. The outside temperature didn't warrant a turtleneck, but she had just come from a freezing movie theater and, yes, she was eager to bust out her new winter uniform. I am too, and I'd like to break it in with this look from Asos.

An unconventional mix of sequins, pleating and an asymmetrical hemline knocks this one out of the ballpark.

We all know how a good statement jacket can carry an outfit. But the Tory Burch jacket, pictured above, has even more tricks up its sleeves. For starters, it's reversible: graphic diamond jacquard print on one side, sleek crinkly leather-like material on the other. The sleeves are also detachable, so it can be worn as a vest. (New York-based jewelry designer Caroline Ventura definitely does it justice!) Other standout jackets that will keep on giving: this Opening Ceremony, this Veronica Beard, this Madewell, this Proenza Schouler and this Rebecca Taylor.

sheer force

In the spirit of Throw Back Thursday--and inspired by the seductively sheer Spring 2015 dresses Balenciaga showed today in Paris--I dug up this photo, taken last November at a charity gala. I'm on the right, boldly showing things off (namely my American Apparel high-waisted bikini bottom) underneath a sheer beaded lace vintage dress. I suspect we'll be seeing more leg (and things), now that these peekaboo pieces are parading down the catwalks. Currently, I am tempted by this sexy but not too sexy MSGM lace pencil skirt or this one by Karla Spectic, this semi-sheer embroidered Reiss top, this gorgeous Rachel Comey black lace overlay dress and this white see-through Pixie Market frock.
