fashion week wish list
Tuesday, February 4
With the commencement of New York Fashion Week just days away, I am (obsessively) mulling over what to pack. Obviously, this is the time to bust out my wardrobe finest and showboat those statement accessories. This is also the time when I crave new dream outfits that include NYC-chic yet chill-proof accoutrements. As luck would have it, Shopbop is staging a behemoth sale, clearing out tons of amazing winter pieces, such as this Rag & Bone tuxedo blazer, this Amour Vert jumpsuit, this Theory fur cardigan and this Ella Moss ruffled dress (all 30% off) that are not only fitting for the front row but for back-in-Cali, too. My fantasy packing list would also include these statement coat and jacket options; these whimsical, look-at-me patterned skirts by Jonathan Saunders, Peter Pilotto and J.Crew (oh, and this solid one that's similar in spirit to the one above); these fancy schmancy party dresses from Marc Jacobs, By Malene Birger and Alexander Wang, along with these street style photog-friendly Ray Ban mirrored sunglasses. In reality, I will be bringing shoes that I could walk everywhere in such as these versatile ankle Jean-Michel Cazabat boots, a fashion-y but still office-appropriate dress such as this tweed McGinn and a skirt like this full leather Asos, a quirky, texture-rich clutch (this Anthropologie bag would be a slam dunk!), and a high-wattage Saint Laurent bag. I will definitely update you on how the suitcase and the fantasy integration come together next week. Wish me luck!

My twin sister Coliena showed up to watch the Super Bowl at my house yesterday wearing a new and super cute varsity jacket. She looked suitably sporty and stylish for the occasion, so, of course, I asked for details. It turns out, her inspiration came in two parts. The first was back in November when she was photographing Gwyneth Paltrow for her website Goop, and GP turned up at the shoot in an awesome Louis Vuitton leather varsity jacket. Then a few days ago my sister did a shoot for a British fashion mag with a major London stylist, who not only sported this floral print varsity jacket but also declared that spring would be chock full of these sporty-retro toppers. (In other words, they're about to reach their fever pitch!) This finally prompted Coliena to go out and buy her own sleek version from Zara. Naturally, I want one now too and will be teaming it with more romantic, feminine pieces, such a pencil skirt or anything lace. So far these players by Current/Elliott (30% off), Rag & Bone and Club Monaco are making the cut.

French Vogue's Emmanuelle Alt (above and below) led the charge at the recent Paris couture shows with a belted jacket. Of course, others immediately followed suit, as evidenced below. How does one get this Gallic-cool look under one's belt? With oversize jackets like this Etoile Isabel Marant (pictured above), this tweed Warehouse and this sleek Mango paired with narrow, vintage-looking belts that literally pull it all together such as this and this. Voila!

the big chill
Wednesday, January 29
Three days deep into Stockholm Fashion Week, attendees are providing the most inspiring lessons in (freezing) cold weather style. Essentials include a neutral menswear-spirited coat such as this and this (on sale for $78!), a big chunky scarf, a classic yet standout bag like this chain link Stella McCartney (similar to the ones pictured) and this Saint Laurent mini (pictured below), plus a vibrant/dramatic statement blouse like this or this that pops nicely against heavy outerwear. (The one above is by Celine.) Bring on the cold!
