sleek sneakers

With Chloe, Lanvin and Alexander Wang's high-style high-tops selling out and the Olsen sisters on board as creative director at Superga, sneakers are officially a big-time fashion statement--and drawing from the picture above seemingly interchangeable with designer, statement-y heels. The sneakers du jour often feature pop art-like graphics and motifs, neon and dayglo. Some of them are covered in sequins and studs, like the ones below from Miu Miu. I came across these sparklers at Barneys in Beverly Hills last weekend with a friend. They were the last pair in the store. I tried them on but alas they were too small for me. They did fit my friend though and she ended up going home with them. No, seriously, I am happy for her.

dressing up
Tuesday, January 17

Maybe it's the New Yorker in me, but I like to dress up. Even when I know I'll be at home all day in front of my computer, I will still get "dressed." So, when I wear jeans--the epitome of casual in my mind (and not to sound obnoxious, but sweats and fleece are not in my style lexicon, unless I'm working out)-- I tend to pair them with something unexpected and fancier on top. This picture represents how I'd dress up jeans for, say, a dinner out with girlfriends: with a pair of Isabel Marant heels, a feminine lacy top and a tuxedo blazer. The look is polished and cool. And exceedingly comfortable too.

the rose parade

I am obsessed with Prada's Spring 2012 vintage-spirited rosette drop earrings and sparkling rhinestone and resin necklaces. In fact, I've thought many times about mining the local flea markets for lookalikes, but thankfully, now I don't have to, because I just discovered a motherlode of inspired options at Forever 21. Obviously, they're not as dramatic (or quirky or glittery) as Prada's baubles, but they'll do. For now.
Pictured, clockwise: (1) Rhinestone roses necklace, $7; (2) Carved rosette necklace, $3; (3) Rose and pearl stud earrings, $3; (4) Red rose stud earrings, $1.50; (5) Rosette bouquet earrings, $5.
P.S. I also snapped up this Tom Binns-like bib necklace, this pearl guy and this rope choker, while hauling the rosy batch above. Go, me!

all about toggles
Thursday, January 12
For the last week or so, all the major US and European designers have been presenting their pre-fall collections to the press, and the one constant among them is the toggle coat. Style.com proclaims it will be the must-have piece next fall. Narciso Rodriguez's version is above, and the ones below are from Moschino Cheap and Chic and Burberry Prorsum (last pic). I love how the toggles add a sporty, casual vibe. I'm thinking about jumping on next fall's bandwagon right now with this cashmere camel toggle jacket by Lover or perhaps this simple black one from Target.

good jeans
Wednesday, January 11
I had the pleasure of working with WhoWhatWear.com co-founder and creative director Katherine Power (pictured above) the other day. Every time I see her, whether it's at a press event or a glitzy LA cocktail party, she's always so put together, her outfit unfailingly spot-on and next season-looking in that knowing fashion editor way. But what's most interesting about my encounters with Katherine is that she always makes me want things I never knew I needed. The other day's outfit revealed to me that I need a mini Celine Shopper tote in black nonchalantly dangling from my shoulder as well as Jenni Kayne's black D'Orsay slippers on my feet (which are, tragically, already sold out). However, the centerpiece of Katherine's look was her pair of high-waisted faded blue jeans from The Row. She said she had washed them a few times to get the right fit and feel. They were slightly loose and tapered and perfectly cropped, so you can wear wear them with flats or heels. And the faded blue wash? Consider it a style omen in the current sea of pastel, waxed and print jeans. So, yes, I'll need those, too.
