My twin sister called me the other day as she often does from an airport waiting lounge. She had a three-hour layover at Heathrow, en route from Norway to LA. In between sips of champagne, she told me all about the fashion campaign she shot in Norway, the various fjord locations, the stylish and super talented New York-based crew she worked with--and, of course, what they wore. "The stylist, the art director, they were all wearing green--army green, olive green, pea green, khaki green--just green! It's the new color," she affirmed. So when I spotted all the mossy hues coming down the Spring 2015 runways (at Derek Lam, Peter Som, J.Crew, Jason Wu, 3.1 Phillip Lim, etc.) and on New York City streets (Harper's Bazaar editor Amanda Weiner, above, in a pretty verdant print today by Michael Kors and blogger Sabrina Meijer, below), I wasn't the least bit surprised. My sister has already cashed in on this emerging trend with this cool pair of cargo pants. I'd like to go green with this classic Equipment silk button-up blouse, this Burberry belted coat or this Madewell, this Jonathan Simkhai circle skirt, this H&M ribbed turtleneck or this luxe Givenchy, this snake embossed Rochas clutch, this Burberry Prosum layered ruffled silk dress, and these Matt Bernson pointy-toe flats.

While I've been devouring all the street style images from New York over the last few days, I've also been enjoying the behind-the-scenes outfits and intriguing fashion moments served up via my Instagram feed. I thought I'd share a few of my faves. The photo, above, was taken by model Delfina Blaquier minutes before Diane Von Furstenberg's show started yesterday. I love the fabulous mix of footwear, bare legs, and piles of iPhones (and Mira Duma's leather-clad baby bump!)--and how you can practically feel the anticipation in the air.

This instagram from New York Times Fashion is a good lesson in dressing, for Proenza Schouler's cut out, mixed print dress can be a lot to master, but editor Kate Davidson Hudson, above, demonstrates that it's actually a cakewalk (and a must-have)--even during the day.

Manrepeller blogger Leandra Medine (on the left) posted this snap of herself outside Rosie Assoulin's presentation, decked out in the designers Spring 2015 wares. More evidence that wide pants are back and bigger than ever. My favorite current options include pairs by Tibi, Joseph and Elizabeth and James.

At 3.1 Phillip Lim's show today, Bag Snob Tina Craig spied this cool cut-out bucket bag and declared it would be slung around her shoulder next spring. (Craig has a closet full of Birkins, so this says a lot!) Can't wait till next spring? Consider the right-now cultish (and sold-out-everywhere) Mansur Gavriel.

New York's fashionistas are flitting around town in uptown-to-downtown-friendly flats, from sneakers to sandals. Elle Accessories Director Maria Duenas Jacobs, shares her chic yet sensible choice: python flat brogues by Christian Louboutin.

Some opted for a late summer look. Others embraced fall. Both ends of the spectrum were among my favorite New York Fashion Week off-the-catwalk outfits. Yesterday Glamour's Fashion News Director Jane Keltner de Valle, above, sported fall's no-fail full-skirt-and-sweater uniform, along with a pair of Celine sandals. Meanwhile blogger/author Leandra Medine, below, stuck to warm weather-friendly clothing, including a Rosie Assoulin belted blouse and denim shorts. I love art director Sofia Sanchez Barrenechea's, sheer lace blouse (last pic), because it's unabashedly feminine and year-round chic. I found a similar lace top here.

New York Fashion Week officially commences today and I'm looking forward to seeing what's on the Spring 2015 runways--and off. Outside the shows, the best outfits are, in my opinion, the ones that don't beg for attention. Ideally, they stand out without trying to. Like the look, above, featuring an asymmetrical Prabal Gurung skirt, No.21 sweater, and Aquazurra lace-up sandals. I'd wear it to Lincoln Center--and beyond--in a heartbeat!

fall updates

It happens every time I unpack from a trip. I start rifling through the racks of my closet and plucking out pieces I no longer want. It's like weeding: I never want to do it, but when I start, I can't stop. Usually, the castoffs outnumber the clothes reinstated from my suitcase, and this last time, post my family vacation to New York, was no different, except that I was thinking about new fall clothes that would soon be making their way on to the racks and how I needed to make room for them! So now that I've made the room, I can justify some major fall shopping. Like every year, and as this blog can attest, my seasonal shopping is a gradual process--in other words, not something I do all at once. Still, I have identified how I'd like to update my wardrobe for fall and boiled it down to eight must-haves. (Though I am sure I will come up with more as September unfolds!) Some of them tap into the season's biggest trends, others are wardrobe staples that simply need to be replaced, and some I've already written about! Here's what I am coveting:

1. Understated investment bag: I'd like to coolly fly below the radar with a sleek, elegant, anonymous-looking bag, one that isn't already flashing around everywhere, such as this gorgeous Tyler Alexandra or this Mark Cross. (Both of these are bound to be cult items, I bet!)

2. Statement fur: I've accumulated some faux furry friends over the last few years, but one (or two more) can't hurt, particularly as they punctuate a cold-weather outfit like nothing else. This year, the zanier (i.e., more colorful, fluffier, printastic), the better. Take for example, this Elizabeth and James, this Shrimps, this Band of Outsiders and this River Island. I could even entertain a cute fuzzy accessory too, such as this Prada t-strap or this Asos clutch.

3. Ankle boots: Make that several pairs. I need one that is everyday-worthy and goes with everything from jeans to skirts, such as these by Loeffler Randall, Steven and Pour La Victoire. I also need to replace my old, banged-up Isabel Marant Dicker boots (yes, they're still indispensable) and am thinking I could simply buy another pair or go for a less expensive version like this one by Club Monaco (love!), Madewell, or Ash. Lastly, I'd like a sexy, dressed-up bootie for evenings out, such as this Tamara Mellon and this Aquazurra.

4. Boyfriend sweater: I will be living in these comfy knits till spring's buds bloom. I featured some good ones here, but also dug up this ribbed All Saints, this Acne Studios turtleneck, this supercozy workweek-to-weekend Nili Lotan, this perfectly slouchy Everlane and this Vince.

5. Ankle-strap flats: One of the defining accessories of the season. I want to step out in this Dolce Vita, this Tabitha Simmons and this Jimmy Choo.

6. Cape or poncho: Or both, as these toppers are a fresh looking way to stave off the old cold! I recently highlighted my favorites here, but found a few more that I love from Alice & Olivia and Burberry.

7. Masculine loafers: I love how these edgy, ahead-of-the-curve shoes--such as this J.Crew and this Tod's--look with feminine pleated skirts, cropped jeans, and snappy mini dresses.

8. Cropped, wide pants: Yes, they're hard to pull off and not necessarily the most flattering, but a) everyone else will be wearing them; b) they're the polar opposite of skinny jeans; and c), I am determined to pull them off! I'd work these pairs from Tory Burch and Proenza Schouler.
